  Radar stands for Radio Detection And Ranging.  It's a system that uses radio waves to determine several things about objects in its range: Distance (Ranging):  By measuring how long it takes for a radio wave pulse to travel to an object and bounce back, the radar can calculate how far away the object is. Direction:  The radar antenna points in a specific direction when it transmits the pulse. By knowing the direction and receiving the echo from that direction, the radar can determine where the object is relative to its position. Radial Velocity:  Some radars can also measure the speed of the object by analyzing the shift in frequency of the reflected wave due to the Doppler effect.
